Discussion over child marriage act ‘futile’: Law Minister

Dhaka – Law Minister Anisul Huq has said the discussion about the special provision of the Child Marriage Restraint Act is futile.”It has been clearly said in the Act that a girl under 18 years age and a boy under 21 years age can’t be allowed to marry and it is the main subject of the Act. But in emergency cases, if needed the underage boys and girls can be allowed to marry with the consent of their parents and respective courts. It does not mean that there is a laxity in the provision,” he said. The Law Minister came up with the observation while talking to reporters after inaugurating the 135 training courses for judges at the Judicial Administration Training Institute in the city.Referring to the judicial department, Anisul said “The government has been working relentlessly for building a skilled judiciary and as part of it, 540 judges of lower courts have been sent to Western Sydney University in Australia for higher education.”A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed with the Australian university on March 28, he said.Besides, two more MoUs have been signed with India during PM’s recent India visit for sending 1,500 judges for higher training in phases, he added.National Judicial Academy of India, located in Bhupal will train up the Bangladeshi judges each year in ten batch, consists of 30 judges, said the Minister.agency
