Export of five essential items of Ramadan suspended

The Ministry of Commerce has imposed a suspension on the export of green chilli, eggplant, cucumber, garlic and coriander-leaves with effect from Sunday to ensure the smooth supply of these essentials in the market during the holy month of Ramadan. “The suspension will be effective for a month till August 7. The decision has been taken in the interest of consumers,” said a Commerce Ministry release on Saturday.
It said the government has taken effective steps so that the prices of essentials do not go up abruptly during the month of fasting.
The government imposes such restriction each year before Ramadan. Earlier, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Commerce Ministry recommended the ban for keeping the Ramadan market stable.
The country’s apex trade body – the Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) – will ensure the price list of essentials in the city’s kitchen markets.
Some 14 teams of the Commerce Ministry will monitor the market regularly and two teams are already out there.
Meanwhile, the FBCCI greeted the government for imposing the ban as it earlier recommended it.
