No electricity at the cost of the Sunderbans

Speakers at a human chain here on Saturday expressed grave concern over the plan to set up Rampal Power Plant near the Sunderbans, saying that it will destroy the world’s largest mangrove forest victimising some 4 million people.“Rampal Power Plant will destroy the Sunderbans. We need electricity, but not at the cost of the Sundarbans,” said Prof Manwar Hossain Tuhin, a Botany Department teacher of Jahangirnagar University.
Over two hundred teachers and students of the university under the banner of Nature Conservation Initiative (NCI) formed the human chain programme on the JU campus.
JU teachers Prof Saleh Ahmed and Prof Golam Rabbani, among others, spoke on the occasion.
The speakers rejected the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) report on the coal-based power plant saying, “The EIA report, prepared by the concerned department of the government, did not take into consideration most of the important aspects of the environment of the Sundarbans, its ecology, flora and fauna…”
The human chain over, a procession was also taken out on the university campus demanding the project’s cancellation.
