Snatching people’s verdict to invite govt’s disaster: BNP

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday warned the government of dire consequences if it snatched people’s verdict in the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) polls either through hatching conspiracy or rigging. “The death bell of the government will ring if it snatches victory through hatching conspiracy or rigging,” he said this while speaking at a press conference at BNP Nayapaltan central office in the in the capital at noon.
Describing various anomalies in the polls, Fakhrul accused the government officials concerned of working in favour of 14-party backed mayoral candidate Ajmat Ullah Khan during the polling.
He said, “Election agents of 18-party alliance backed (mayoral) candidate MA Mannan were forced out from some polling centres. About 80 percent election officials discharging election activities are former Chhatra League leaders.”
The BNP leader alleged that voting in the election to GCC was going on in a dilly-dally manner.
He, however, expressed the hope that opposition-backed candidate MA Mannan will emerge victorious in the polls with big margin.
In a note of another warning, he said, “People will resist if there’s any rigging. And the Election Commission must shoulder the responsibility for that.”
BNP leaders MK Anwar, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Abdus Salam were, among others, present.
