Six cops among 8 sued for C’nawabganj custodial death

A case has been filed against eight people, including six policemen, over the death of a murder accused in police custody.

The accused are- officer-in-charge Anwar Hossain, three sub-inspectors Abdul Barik, Ahsan Habib, Johurul, assistant sub-inspector Md Shamsul, constable Chand Nazrul of Nachole Police Station, Nasir Uddin and his brother-in-law Jafar Iqbal.

Shahinur Alam, an elder brother of deceased Mahfuzur Rahman, filed the case on Sunday with Chapainawabganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Court accusing the eight and some unmanned people, said Akramul Islam, lawyer of the case.

Later, Shariful Islam, a senior judicial magistrate ordered superintendent of Chapainawabganj Police to submit the report after investigation taking the case as FIR (First Information Report).

The court also ordered to inform the incident to Inspector General (IG) and Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police.

Mahfuzur Rahman, accused in a murder case, died on July 26 during his remand.

Police arrested Mahfuzur on July 19 in a case filed in connection with the death of a school girl over wrong treatment at a private clinic. Later, he was put on remand.

According to the case statement, Police demanded Tk 1 lakh from Shahinur after placing Mahfuzur on remand. He gave Tk 20,000 to police. As he failed to pay the rest amount on time, police tortured Mahfuzur to death. Later, they staged the incident to prove that he had committed suicide.
