Dhaka – Convicted Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mojahid on Sunday filed an appeal with the Appellate Division against his capital punishment in the case of crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.After finding the 1971 Al Badr boss guilty of five of the seven charges, the International Crimes Tribunal-2 on July 17 handed down the death sentence for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in collaboration with the Pakistan occupation forces. The charges included murder of intellectuals, genocide, abduction and persecution.
Also a former technocrat minister of the last BNP-led alliance government,
Mujahid, now 66, was held responsible for abduction and murder of intellectuals, including noted journalist of the daily Ittefaq Sirajuddin Hossain and other cultural personalities like composer Altaf Mahmud and illustrious teachers like Muneir Chowdhury and murder and torture of minority community Hindus in Faridpur district.
Talking to journalists, advocate Tajul Islam, a counsel for Mujahid, said a 95-page compact statement with 3,800 pages documents were submitted to the section concerned seeking acquittal referring various reasons against the ICT death sentence. – UNB
