A leader of Islami Chhatra Shibir was reportedly shot dead in a clash with police at the city’s Jatrabari during today’s (Wednesday) countrywide 48-hour hartal enforced by Jamaat-e-Islami.
However, police claimed the victim, Khalilur Rahman, 22, president of the city’s 88-ward unit of the student front of Jamaat, was crushed to death under the wheels of a vehicle.
Witnesses said a group of Shibir men, numbering 40/50, in support of the shutdown, brought out a procession from in front of Dhania AK High School in Jatrabari at about 7.00am.
At one stage, they blasted several crude bombs and vandalised some vehicles in the area.
When the unruly Shibir activists tried to torch a number of vehicles, police charged baton and opened several rounds of bullet to disperse them.
A chase and counter-chase followed and Khalilur was found injured.
He was rushed to Mitford Hospital, Dhaka where attending doctors declared him dead.
On the other hand, Abuni Kar, inspector (Investigation) of Jatrabari Police Station, said Shibir activists blasted crude bombs and vandalised some vehicles during a procession.
When they attempted to torch a few vehicles, police obstructed them and after a chase the picket (Khalilur) was crushed under a running bus and later he died after he was taken to hospital, he added.
