A court here on Tuesday sentenced a man to life term imprisonment for killing his 14-
month-old daughter four years back.
The convict was identified as M Jasim Uddin of Norerkathi area in Barisal sadar upazila.
M Matiar Rahman, additional district and sessions judge of Barisal, handed down the
verdict to Jasim in his presence and fined him Tk 30,000, default in payment of which

According to the prosecution, Jasim married Eliza Begum of Dudhal village in Bakerganj

daughter, in 2008.
Since then, Jasim had continued torture on his wife for dowry.
Failing to endure the unbearable torture, Eliza once fled with her twins and took shelter at
her father’s house.
Later, Jasim brought his wife back home giving assurance in an arbitration of not
torturing her further for dowry.
On November 11, 2009, Eliza went to a nearby pond for bathing, leaving the twins to her
husband.
After returning home, she found that blood was coming out of the nose of her daughter
Tamanna and her husband Jasim was not present there.
The baby was then rushed to the local health complex where on-duty doctors declared her
dead.
Later, Eliza lodged a murder case with Barisal Kotwali Police Station against Jasim.
In a confessional statement, Jasim pleaded himself guilty, saying he strangulated his
daughter to death over a family feud.
After examining witnesses and evidence, the court pronounced the verdict awarding
Jasim the jail term. -UNB, Barisal
