First IO testifies

The Fourth Speedy Trial Tribunal of Dhaka recorded partial depositions of the first investigation officer (IO) in the Biswajit murder case on Sunday and fixed Monday for recording further depositions of the IO.
Judge-in-Charge Md Nuruzzaman of the tribunal began recording the deposition at 12 noon, that continued up to 1 o’clock and later he recorded the IO’s deposition from 3 to 4 pm.
The IO conducted the inquiry of the case from 9 to 15 December last year and during the period he took the depositions of six witnesses, made the seizures and drew a map of the spot. The IO and also a Sub-inspector of Sutrapur Police Station in the capital Mahbubul Alam told the tribunal these things.
Later the defence lawyers cross-examined the witness and at one stage he produced slain Biswajit’s seized sandal, blood stained pant and under-wire before the tribunal.
Besides, he produced several seized VDOs and CDOs of the mass media.
However, those VDOs and CDOs were not shown on Sunday as the defence lawyers did not want to see those. Public Prosecutor of the tribunal, SM Rafiqul Islam told the newsmen that they would produce the VDO footage before the tribunal during argument of the case.
Detective Branch (DB) Police Inspector Tajul Islam made inquiry of the case after first IO. He will testify after the deposition of first IO of the case.
Biswajit Das, was hacked to death allegedly by some Bangladesh Chhatra League activists near Bahadur Shah Park in the old city during the opposition’s countrywide road blockade programme on December 9 last year.
Of the 21 accused eight were produced before the tribunal during the hearing, 13 others are on the run. Of the eight arrestees, Shakil, Nahid, Emdad and Shaon made confessional statements to the court admitting to their involvement in the murder.  – Court Correspondent
