An eight-member delegation of University Teachers’ Association of Bangladesh (UTAB) called on leader of the opposition Khaleda Zia at her Gulshan residence on Saturday night.The call on was first of its kind after deployment of additional law enforcers surrounding the residence of the opposition leader since Friday night.
During the meeting, the teachers discussed the latest development in the political arena following the arrest of BNP leaders and exchanged views to strengthen the ongoing movement for restoration of non-party election-time government.
“We have discussed the overall development in the political arena and different aspects of a possible dialogue between the ruling and opposition parties,” Prof AFM Yusuf Haider told reporters after the meeting.
He said they also discussed holding a free and fair poll in the country under a non-party government.
Yusuf Haider, who led an eight member delegation, said they expressed their concern over the ongoing political situation.
“We regretted the arrest of the BNP leaders and apprised the opposition leader that it would hamper the dialogue process,” he added.
The delegation went to the residence of Khaleda Zia at about 9:00pm and their meeting with the BNP chairperson lasted one hour and a half.
Later, a team of journalist community leaders, a group pro-BNP cultural activists led by film director Chashi Nazrul Islam and a delegation of Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh led by its joint secretary general Rafiqul Islam Bacchu called on the opposition leader at her residence separately. – Staff Reporter
