RU BCL leader killed in Gaibandha

Unidentified assailants killed a Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader of Rajshahi University (RU) on Thursday at Sundarganj Upazila in Gaibandha.
Locals and RU BCL alleged that activists of the Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami, were behind the murder of Khalilur Rahman Mamun, 25.Police said agitated locals had attacked and vandalised the Jamaat’s local office and a leader’s house.
Mamun was the President of the BCL’s Shah Makhdum Hall unit at RU. He hailed from the Upazila’s Domerhat area and was a student at the university’s folklore department.
His father Angur Mia told reporters that some 10 Shibir activists attacked Mamun at Domerhat bazar in the evening.
He succumbed to his severe head injuries while being rushed to the Rangpur Medical College and Hospital, Additional Superintendent of Police of Gaibandha Mosharraf Hossain told journalists.
Hossain said locals attacked the Jamaat office here and the house of Jamaat leader Badshah Mia.
Irate locals also set fire to eight shops at Domerhat bazaar, he added.
On hearing of Mamun’s killing, RU BCL took out a procession on the campus around 9pm. They also briefly blocked the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway in front of the university gate.
RU BCL President Mizanur Rahman Rana told journalists “Shibir had threatened to kill Mamun on the campus. They attacked and killed him at Sundarganj – something that they failed to do within the university. ”
RU Shibir unit has denied any hand in Mamun’s murder. – bdnews24.com
