11 get 6 months’ jail for picketing in Satkhira

A mobile court here on Sunday night sentenced 11 people to six months’ jail each for picketing in support of the BNP-led 18-party alliance’s 72-hour rail-road-waterway blockade in Jhaudanga area of Sadar upazila.

The convicts, including Mokarram, Belal, Iqbar, Sabur, Nazrul and Alim, hail from different villages of the upazila.

Commanding officer Lt. Col. Imam Hossain of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Battalion-38 said a team of BGB arrested the 11 people while they were carrying out picketing in Jhaudanga area on Sunday night during the blockade.

Later, executive magistrate Iqbal Hossain handed down the verdict after the arrestees were produced before the court.

The convicts were sent to jail on Monday morning, said Enamul Haque, officer-in-charge of Satkhira Sadar Police Station. -UNB, Satkhira
