Dhaka – Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) president Mujahidul Islam Selim on Sunday said the parties of the ruling class are now playing a trick to annihilate democracy in the name of combating communalism.“The state and the ruling parties are patronising communal forces…and the preparation is on to annihilate democracy with the excuse of tackling communalism. Communalism can’t be tackled over the grave of democracy,” he said.
Selim was speaking at a discussion jointly organised by CPB and Socialist Party of Bangladesh (SPB) at Mukti Bhaban on the Victory Day to be observed on Monday.
While cautioning about the plot to bury democracy undercover of combating communalism, the CPB president at the same time called on all to forge a movement to reinstate secularism in the country as it was envisioned by the nation during the Liberation War in 1971.
“Even after 42 years of the independence, the aspirations of the Liberation War have not been accomplished. Bangladesh was established as a secular state over the burial of the communal two-state formula, but the communal forces are on the rise at present,” he said.
Selim also termed the government’s preparation over the general election a ‘mockery’.
“The mockery that is happening for the election has exposed the flaws in the election system, besides the bankruptcy of the government,” he said.
“If 154 candidates are elected without the casting of the people’s votes, can that parliament be considered to be the representative of people?” he questioned.
SPB general secretary Khalequzzam and CPB general secretary Syed Abu Zafar Ahmed also spoke on the occasion. – UNB
