ACC unwilling to probe income of MP candidates

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is unwilling at this moment to launch probe into unreported income of a number of ruling party leaders who are contesting in the forthcoming January 5 general elections.“We do not want to asses the wealth statement given by candidates in their affidavits before the Election Commission to avoid possible indiscipline in the country,” said ACC Commissioner M Shahabuddin Chuppu.
Talking to reporters he apprehended that the commission goes for checking the wealth statement of the candidate it may lead to a chaos when an election wind blowing across the country.  “The commission is not willing to do this at the movement,” he added.
Besides, he said, the commission organisationally was not in a position to investigate the sources of wealth of candidates who had earlier provided their wealth statements to the EC.
The commissioner of anti-corruption watchdog however said that they would examine the matter after the poll.
He made this comment following the EC reporting an unusual rise in incomes of a number of ministers and ruling party leaders.
Asked whether the commission is working against the BNP leaders with an ill motive, Shahabuddin said the commission did not file any case against any BNP leader rather it summoned and questioned a number of government advisers, ministers and ruling party lawmakers. He said, the commission also filed case against some of them.
Replying to a question on filing a case against BNP leader Barrister Moudud Ahmed, he said none is above law. “The case was filed against him (Moudud) on the basis of specific allegation not as a person,” he added. – Staff Reporter
