Anti-Corruption Commission on Monday quizzed the gunman and the driver of the retired special judge Motahar Hossain, who had acquitted the BNP’s senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman of charges in a money laundering case.
ACC deputy director Harun-ur-Rashid questioned driver Shohrab Hossain and gunman Badal Dewan at the commission’s headquarters at Segunbagicha from 11:00am to 1:30pm, an ACC official told reporters.The commission served notices to two bench clerks and summoned a lawyer for interrogating them in this connection.
Bench clerks Abul Kalam Azad of speedy trial tribunal-4 and Ariful Islam, of special judge’s court-3 have been asked to appear before the commission on January 29.
Advocate Pabitra Sarkar, also assistant general manager of Bashundhara Group has been summoned to appear before the commission on January 28 to give statements related to the inquiry.
The ACC earlier had quizzed two stenographers–M Abu Hasan of speedy trial tribunal-4 and M Nurul Islam of special judge’s court-3 in this connection.
The ACC received a graft allegation against the former judge this month. After examining the allegation, the commission decided to launch an inquiry into the allegation.
According to the allegation received by the commission, former special judge of Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judge Court Motahar Hossain accumulated huge movable and immovable wealth illegally and laundered money abroad.
The ACC appointed an inquiry officer on January 20 to probe graft allegation against Motahar and sent letters to Additional IGP (Special Branch) and immigration authorities to see that the former judge cannot leave the country.
But the commission inquiry officer has claimed that Motahar has already left the country and is now staying in Malaysia, who went on retirement on December 30, 2013.
On November 17 last year, Judge Motahar Hossain acquitted Tarique Rahman, eldest son of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, in a money-laundering case involving Tk 20.41 crore. – Staff Reporter
