Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Friday said she has been working to create a healthy environment of constructive discussion in Parliament.
“I’ve been working for creating healthy atmosphere in Parliament for constructive discussion, criticism and debate in line with the Constitution,” she told reporters after inaugurating the Rotary International District-3282 Conference here at noon. The Speaker inaugurated the two-day pioneer conference at the Chittagong Boat Club in Patenga.Dr Shirin Sharmin said Parliament is the centre of all discussion in parliamentary democracy. All important national issues should be discussed in Parliament.
Asked how the 10th parliament will be effective in the absence of a major political party like BNP, she said the present parliament was formed with people’s mandate to uphold the constitution and to continue the democratic process. This parliament will be kept effective.
Terming the Rotarians as torch bearers, the Speaker said they can lead the nation from the front to bring positive changes in the society.
She lauded the various activities of the Rotarians, including in education, health and sanitation, in alleviating poverty, establishing peace and carrying out awareness programmes to prevent cancer.
Chaired by Rotarian Sufi Mizanur Rahman, the inaugural session of the pioneer conference, was also addressed by Rotary district governor M Aminuzzaman and Rotary International President’s representative KS Pillay. – UNB
