Ex-minister Mahbubur terms his quizzing at ACC as positive step

Former state minister for water resources Mahbubur Rahman on Sunday termed his interrogation at the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) as a positive step.
He made the comment while talking to some reporters after emerging from the ACC headquarters at Segunbagicha in the city as he was quizzed for over three hours from 11:00am. He tried not to make any comment saying that he has no comment.
At one stage, he said, “What I want to say the questioning by the ACC people is a positive move of the commission.”  ACC deputy director Md Khairul Huda quizzed the ruling party lawmaker on the charge of amassing illegal wealth. The commission on February 12 sent a notice to Mahbubur Rahman asking him to appear at the ACC head office to face questioning.
According to the affidavit placed before the Election Commission before the national poll on January 5, Mahbubur Rahman who has virtually become a landlord over the five-year period owning 2,865 acres of land. He had only 20 acres of land in 2008.
The AL lawmaker owns Tk 5.25 crore in immovable properties, up from Tk 36.33 lakh five years back. Five years ago his wife had savings certificates worth only Tk 5 lakh. But now she has assets worth Tk 1.26 crore, ACC sources said.
According to his wealth statement submitted five years ago, his annual income stood at Tk 2.15 lakh that soared to Tk 1.50 crore which he claims comes from fisheries trade.
The ACC is scheduled to quiz former health minister AFM Ruhul Haque on Monday. – Staff Reporter
