Cop suspended over JMB ambush

A third policeman has been suspended over Sunday’s ambush by masked gunmen on a prison van before they freed three convicted Jam’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) militants.
Gazipur SP Md Abdul Baten said Habilder Major Ayub Ali of Gazipur Police Lines had been temporarily relieved of his duties on Monday night.
A policeman was killed and two others were injured in the ambush on a prison van carrying JMB radicals from Kashimpur jail to Mymensingh for a court hearing.Rakibul Hasan alias Hafez Mahmud, Salauddin Salehin alias Sunny, and Jahidul Islam alias Bomaru Mizan had escaped after the surprise attack.
Subedar Abdul Karim of Gazipur Police Lines was suspended while Reserve Inspector (RI) Saidul Karim was withdrawn for neglect of duty.
Of the three JMB militants, Rakibul was arrested hours later and killed in an alleged gunfight with police in Tangail in the early hours of Monday. The other two are still at large.
Police have announced a Tk 500,000 bounty on each of their head.
An investigation committee formed by the home ministry visited the spot on Tuesday.
Led by Additional Secretary Nazimuddin Chowdhury, the four-member committee spoke with the local people and inspected the prison van that had come under attack.
Responding to a query, Chowdhury said they would file a report within the next three days.
