Heavy monsoon downpour since Tuesday noon paralysed normal life in
Barisal city and restricted small water transpotrations from Barisal
Port.
Barisal Met office sources said, torrential rainfall started in
Barisal city with thunderbolts and gusty wind from about 12:30 noon
continued till tis report with short breaks.
Barisal met office sources said amount of rain fall crossed more than
92 milimeter till 6:00 pm and drizzles continued till this report.
The city-sky will remain cloudy with mid to heavy ranged raining and
gusty wind with 15-20 Km per hour, local weather forecast told.
Most of the people became bound to confine themselves inside the room
and students, office employees suffered much to attend and return from
educational institution, offices as premises engulfed with logged
water and transports became scarce on city roads demanding higher-fare
from the passengers.
Water logging on city roads and low lying areas due to lack of proper
drainage and sewerage system, and over flooded shops, houses on
roadside, river and canal banks, caused sufferings as flooded with
water, after visiting the city areas found.
Makeshift shops, hawker markets remained close in most of the parts of
the day and kitchen markets facing very few customers as people not
coming out from home without emergency needs.
On other hand Barisal port authorities restricted plying ML (motor
launch) types of water transports less than 65-feet in length from
Barisal river port until further order from 2:00 pm Tuesday.
The step was taken after weather department asked inland river-port
authorities to hoist cautionary weather signal no. 2 from Tuesday noon
following the heavy downpour with gusty wind in Barisal Port and
adjoining areas, said Abul Bashar Mazumdar, deputy director, traffic
and marine safety department of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport
Authourity Barisal office.
Md. Shahidullah, Barisal Port Officer, explained that operators of
triple deck Barisal-Dhaka bound launches asked to ply cautiously due
to adverse weather and rough river condition in the region.
Gopal Chandra Majumdar, assistant General Manager BIWTC Barisal
Station said, rocket steamers PS Ostrich on Dhaka-Morelganj and PS
Turn on Morelganj-Dhaka root departed Barisal port safely.
Road transport operators and passengers said road communications with
Kuakata tourist zone often disrupted as ferry gangways went under
water and road transports plying with high risks on most of the parts
of Barisal-Faridpur route on Barisal-Dhaka highway due to bad
conditions of connecting roads and heavy downpour.
Shohidul Alam, deputy commissioner of Barisal, said upazila nirbahi
officers, agriculture, disaster and relief management departments
asked to monitor the situation round the clock.
Arrival of monsoon air currents and attraction of upcoming full
monsoon causing heavy downpours in the region and made conditions of
river estuaries and sea were very rough with high waves and strong
tides and gusty winds, said Prodip Kumar, officer of Kalapara weather
radar station.
