Court’s cognizance of 5 cases against ex-Speaker

Taking cognizance of the charges of misappropriation of public fund in five separate cases filed against former Speaker Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar and two others, a court here on Thursday set July 11 for hearing on charge framing.Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge M Zahurul Huq passed the order upon petitions filed by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).
The two other accused are former Deputy Speaker Akhtar Hamid Siddiqui and former chief accounts officer of Parliament Secretariat Ashraful Islam.
All the three accused are enjoying bail in connection with the cases. Among others, accused Akhtar Hamid Siddiqui and Ashraful Islam were present in the court today (Thursday).
The ACC filed the cases with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station accusing them of misappropriating a total of Tk 67,34,588 from the public fund while in office.
On November 7 last year, the ACC submitted the charge-sheet in connection with the five graft cases.
On December 28 in 2010, ACC deputy director M Moniruzzaman Khan and deputy assistant director SM Khabiruddin filed the five cases against former Speaker Jamiruddin Sircar, former Deputy Speaker Akhtar Hamid Siddiqui, former chief accounts officer of Parliament Secretariat Ashraful Islam and former chief whip Khondker Delwar Hossain. Later, Khondker Delwar Hossain was dropped from the charge-sheets following his death. (Source: UNB)
