AL behind onion price spiral, alleges BNP

The BNP has alleged that the ruling party’s ‘syndicate’ is behind the spiralling prices of onion ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

“Onion is now selling at Tk 120 a kg. Who hiked the price ahead of Eid?” asked BNP Standing Committee Member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah at a meeting on Sunday.

“If inquired, we will find that a group of the government that looted billions of money from Destiny, Hallmark, capital market and quick rental power plants are making quick money by raising the onion price,” he said.

Free Thinkers’ Forum organised a meeting at the National Press Club in the city.

Rafiqul Islam urged the people to join the BNP’s movement for a caretaker government.

“Come down on the street after Oct 24 if you want to save the country from the looters,” the BNP leader said.

“This is not time to stay home. We have to be on the streets until the government leaves,” he said.

The Supreme Court lawyer referred to the 15th amendment to the constitution.

“According to article 123, there is no scope to extend parliament session after Oct 24. But senior leaders of the ruling party have urged the speaker to continue Parliament sessions.”

The BNP leader said the government had made the provision to hold the polls within 90 days of the parliament under the partisan government being dissolved. But now the ruling party was disregarding it.

Rafiqul Islam said, “The ruling party has only one target: To remain in power.”

He alleged that the Prime Minister was trying to confuse the people saying that no polls would be held under unelected people.-bdnews24.com
