A local Awami League activist was hacked to death by unidentified miscreants at Pacha Magura village in Abhaynagar upazila on Sunday night.
The deceased was identified as Chaitanya Mondal, 50, an activist of Prembagh Union unit AL and son of Marindra Mondal of the village.
Officer-in-charge Khabir Udding Ahmed of Abhaynagar Police Station said a gang of miscreants swooped on Chaitanya at his drugs shop at the village around 8:30pm and chopped him mercilessly, leaving him dead on the spot.
The attackers also torched the medicine shop.
Chaitanya might have been killed over previous enmity, the OC added.
The body was sent to the morgue of Jessore Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

All of the victims are day-labourers while details of them could not be known immediately.
Alamgir, havildar of Sadarghat Fire Service, said the accident took place at No-10 platoon of the area around 8pm when a boat that was carrying 10 passengers to cross the river, capsized by hit by triple-decker launch, ‘MV Bhola’.
However, six of them managed to swim ashore.
Efforts on to rescue the missing people, Alamgir added.
