AL nominee for Mayor Atiqul Islam takes Nomination papers

Dhaka, Jan 27 – The Awami League nominated candidate Atiqul Islam on Sunday collected nomination form to contest the upcoming Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayoral by-elections scheduled to be held on February 28.
Still, now 21 candidates have collected their respective nomination papers from the returning officer of DNCC, in a bid to contest the mayoral race.
AKM Mizanur Rahman on behalf of the business leader Atiqul Islam collected the nomination papers from Abul Kashem, returning officer of DNCC.
Those who have collected nomination papers are—Md. Selim Uddin, Mohammad Shafin Ahmed, Dr HBM Iqbal, Sheikh Mohammad Fazle Bari Masud, Swadhin Akhter Irin, Md. Shakil Wahid, Mohammad Masum Billah, Robin Kumar Pal, Gazi Yeakub, AYM Kamrul Islam, Abul Kalam Azad, Md Anisuzzaman Khokon, Md. Osman Gani, Md. Morsalin Haider, Faruk Ahmed, HM Golam Reza, Khaleda Khanam, Junaid Abdur Rahim Saki, Zinnur Ahmad Chowdhury and Anisur Rahman Dewan.
According to the schedule, the last date for nomination submission is January 30 while the scrutiny will be held on February 2 and the last date for withdrawal of nomination is February 9.
The Election Commission on January 22 last announced the schedules for by-polls to the DNCC mayoral post, and its councillor posts in 18 new wards as well as the councillor posts of Dhaka South City  Corporation in its 18 new wards fixing February 28 for the balloting.
Meanwhile, Awami League’s local government nomination board unanimously on Saturday picked Atiqul, former president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, as its candidate to run the race in DNCC by-polls.
However, the DNCC mayoral post fell vacant following the death of Annisul Huq on November 30, 2017.
On January 9 last year, the EC had declared the schedule of the DNCC by-polls and elections to the new wards, setting February 26 for voting.
The polls were not held at the High Court stayed the election schedule for six months. On January 16 this year, the HC cleared the way for holding the polls. – Staff Reporter
