BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Thursday alleged that the ruling party is trying to hold ‘voter-less’ elections in Rajshahi, Barishal and Sylhet city corporations on July 30.
“The Election Commission still couldn’t create a congenial atmosphere for fair balloting in the three cities. We’re having formation that the cadres of Awami League and its associate bodies are getting ready to hold voter-less elections with the help of police,” he said.
He came up with the allegation while speaking at a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan central office.
Rizvi also alleged that the ruling party MPs, mayoral candidates and their supporters are indulging in widespread violation of the election code of conduct in the three cities.
He said the government employees, including law enforcers, a university VC, medical college principal, college teachers and civil surgeons, are directly working for Awami League candidates. “Even, election officers are also working in favour of the ruling party.”
Rizvi alleged that though their party has been lodging various complaints with the Election Commission against violation of election conduct, ‘wholesale’ arrest of BNP leaders and activists and obstruction to electioneering, the Commission is not taking any action.
Speaking at the press meet, BNP vice chairman Hafizuddin Ahmed alleged that the by-polls to Bhola’s Tamijuddin Union Parishad’s chairman post was held on Wednesday amid widespread irregularities, including vote rigging and capturing of polling centres.
He demanded a judicial investigation into the by-polls. “It’s an exceptional election where voters, even those belong to Awami League didn’t go to the polling stations. But the voter turnout was shown 77 percent.”
