All to get smart NID cards by Dec-Jan: CEC

Dhaka – Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda on Wednesday said all voters will get smart national identity cards by December-January next.“We’ll try to provide the cards to all citizens (voters) by next December-January,” he said while inaugurating the distribution of smart NID card in Bhola through videoconferencing from Nirbachan Bhaban in the city’s Agargaon area.

The CEC said smart national identity card is a modern technology-based document. It can be called a very important personal document for Bangladesh, he added.

Four other election commissioners, the EC secretary and its additional secretary and NID wing Director General inaugurated the distribution of the smart cards in seven other districts through videoconferencing from the Nirbachan Bhaban.

On Thursday, the Election Commission will start the distribution of the smart cards in 19 other districts.

This time the EC will distribute smart NID cards in sadar upazilas of 26 districts and Bhanga upazila of Faridpur.

The 26 districts are Manikganj, Munshiganj, Narsingdi, Sherpur, Jamalpur, Mymensingh, Tangail, Kishoreganj, Brahmanbaria, Lakshmipur, Chandpur, Feni, Natore, Chapainawabganj, Sirajganj, Noagaon, Chuadanga, Magura, Jhenaidah, Satkhira, Kushtia, Jashore, Rajbari, Madaripur, Bhola and Maulvibazar.
