Alleged ‘robber’ killed in B’baria ‘gunfight’ with cops

Dhaka – An alleged robber was killed in a reported ‘gunfight’ between his cohorts and police at Shashai on the Dhaka-Shylhet highway in Bijoynagar upazila of Brahmanbaria district early Thursday, Unb news agency reported.
The deceased was identified as Mohabbat Khan,29, a resident of Koarpur village in Nasirnagar upazila of the district.Officer-in-charge of Bijoynagar Police Station Ali Arshad said on a tip-off that a gang of robbers were taking preparation to commit robbery on the highway, a team of police launched a drive there at about 3:30 am.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the gang members opened fire at them, prompting the police personnel to retaliate that triggered a gunfight, leaving Mohabbat injured.
Later, Mohabbat was rushed to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead. Other associates of Mohabbat managed to flee the scene, Police said.
Three policemen, including Sub-inspector Shafiqul, were injured during the gunfight. Police also recovered a pipe-gun and some sharp weapons from the spot. Mohabbat was wanted in 11 cases, including for robbery, the OC added.
