Amar Ekushey observed in Faridpur

Amar Ekushey and the International Mother Language Day was observed here in a befitting manner on Saturday.
At the beginning of the great hour at midnight of February 20, officers and employees of government,semi-government institutions and members of socio-cultural organizations started pouring into the newly built Shaheed Minar at Rajendra College and placed wreaths at the altar of the Minar.Another newly constructed Shaheed Minar was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Sardar Sharafat Ali on the premises of local Ishan Girls’ Institution in the morning in presence of students, teachers and dignitaries.The national flag flew at half-mast atop all buildings at the advent of the dawn. A mourning procession paraded the town streets in the morning.A reception to language veteran and Awami League leader SM Nurunnnabi followed by a discussion meeting was held at Kabi Jasimuddin hall in the morning.Deputy Commissioner Sardar Sharafat Ali addressed the meeting as the chief guest while ADC (Rev.) Dr Quamruzzaman Selim in the chair.The meeting was addressed, among others, by Awami League advisory council member and language veteran SM Nurunnabi, BSS Correspondent Prof Md Shahjahan, Awami League leader Mokarrom Mia Babu, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) ABM Zakir Hossain and cultural activist and freedom fighter Abul Faez Shahnwaj.Speakers paid rich tributes to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the cause of mother language on February 21 of 1952. The speakers described the language movement as the first forward step towards achieving our ultimate goal of liberation of Bangladesh.A three-day book fair was also inaugurated on the premises of Kabi Jasimuddin hall after the discussion by DC Sardar Sharafat Ali.
