Amnesty call for release of leftist leader Dilip Ray

Rajshahi-Amnesty International in a statement on on their official website on Friday called upon Bangladesh authorities to withdraw the charges against leftist leader Dilip Roy, who was arrested by Rajshahi police on August 28 for criticizing Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina on his two Facebook posts over the decision of building Rampal coal-fired power plant near Sundarbans through the huge criticism.They call to the authorities release him unconditionally and also call to repeal the section 57 of the Information and Communication Technology Act that goes to the against human right.
Dilip Roy is a student of Rajshahi University, where he is the General Secretary of student organisation Biplobi Chhatra Maitri.
He was arrested by police on August 28 after criticizing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in two Facebook posts.
The posts focused on Sheikh Hasina’s support for a proposed coal-fired power plant in Rampal in southern Bangladesh, which many environmental activists oppose as it could have a damaging effect on Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest.
After Dilip Roy was arrested, a member of the local chapter of the Chhatra League – the student wing of the ruling party Awami League – filed a case against him under Section 57 of the ICT Act for making ‘defamatory remarks’ about Prime Minister and the Awami League.
His request for bail was rejected by the Rajshahi Magistrate Court on 31 August, with a second bail hearing scheduled for 4 September.- RU Correspondent
