BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday blasted the statement of Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam that there would be no election before 2019.
He termed the statement of the ruling party leader a reflection of AL’s desire to establish one-party rule in the country. Fakhrul was talking to reporters at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport after his arrival from Singapore at about 10:15pm Thursday.“Whatever I understand from the statement of Mr Ashraf that they want to stage drama in the name of election without participation of other parties and they will only form government,” he said.
The BNP leader said that his (Ashraful’s) statement made it clear that they want to establish one-party rule in the country.
On Wednesday, the AL general secretary said that the next polls would be held after five years in accordance with the present constitution and no change would be made in the meantime.
Fakhrul said the people would never accept one-party rule in the country. He said if the government believes in democracy they would take initiative for next polls immediately.
“An urgent election is needed to protect democracy and resolve political crisis,” he added. The BNP leader went to Singapore on February 8 for treatment. His wife Rahat Ara accompanied him.
Fakhrul went to BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office directly from the airport and met the party leader Khaleda Zia. – Staeporter
