ASK expresses concern at ‘torture’ on Shahidul Alam

Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK) on Tuesday expressed its deep concern at the incident of alleged torture on renowned photographer and human rights activist, Shahidul Alam, during his time in custody.

Mentioning that article 35 (5) of Bangladesh Constitution protects the citizens from torture or any cruel, inhuman, or degrading punishment or treatment, ASK, in its press statement, urged the state forces to ensure not to violate the order of the High Court in this regard.

According to media sources, photographer Shahidul Alam was picked up by plainclothes men on Sunday night from his Dhanmondi residence, said the statement.

Later on Monday, he was shown arrested under Section 57 of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) act accusing him of spreading propaganda and false information in social media and electronic media.

Police produced him before the court on the same day seeking 10 days’ remand while the court placed him on a seven-day remand.

ASK said, Shahidul Alam alleged that he has been physically tortured. It said, the incident of torture goes counter to High Court directives about the reform of provisions of arrest without warrant and interrogation on remand under section 54 and 167 of the Criminal Procedures (CrPC).
