Ataur Rahman turns 76

An elaborate programme will be organized to celebrate the 76th birthday of veteran theatre personality Ataur Rahman on Sunday.

Ataur Rahman Jonmo Udjapon Parishad will arrange the programme at the Studio Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in the capital.

A cake-cutting will take place on the occasion where noted theatre personalities and prominent activists will give floral greetings to him.

The birthday celebration event will also feature discussion and recitation.

He served as the general secretary and later president of Bangladesh Centre of the International Theatre Institute (BCITI). He is the founder general secretary of the theater troupe ‘Nagorik Natya Sampradaya’ and former chairman of Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation.

Ataur Rahman directed over 30 plays, including ‘Roktokorobi’, ‘Banglar Mati Banglar Jol’, ‘Narigon’, ‘Irsha’, ‘Opekkhoman’, and ‘Waiting for Godot’.

Ataur Rahman was awarded with Ekushey Padak in 2001 for his contribution to drama while he also received the prestigious Shaheed Munier Chowdhury Award.

He was born in Noakhali on June 18 in 1941.
