Attackers are homegrown: Rab DG

Director General of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) Benazir Ahmed on Monday said those carrying out terrorist activities in the country are homegrown criminals. He came up with the claim while talking to reporters after inaugurating a mobile app, ‘Report 2 Rab,’ at the Rab headquarters. The Rab DG said those involved in the Gulshan and Sholakia attacks had a link with Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). “However, the details will be known following investigation,” he said. He said militant Shafiul Islam Sohan alias Mukaddil, who was arrested after an exchange of gunfire between police and terrorists in Sholakia of Kishoreganj, was accused of in four murder cases. The main motive behind the militant attacks was to hamper the country’s progress, he claimed. Dhaka, UNB News Agency Reported.

Noting that many young men reappeared as militants after remaining missing for a long time, he underscored the need for taking a social initiative to find out the rest of the missing youths as well as to prevent militant activities. Terming militancy a global problem, the Rab DG said there are three types of militancy — leftist, ethnic and religious. “Militant activities are present in all the 47 countries of the Asia Pacific region,” he said quoting a book written by a foreigner. Talking about the new app, Benazir said people can send information and photos related to any terrorist acts like militancy, terrorism, murder, robbery, illegal drug trading, as well as social media watch and missing persons to the elite force through the app keeping their identity secret. “As a result, Rab can easily get crime-related information from people.”
