Attempt to lay siege on Khaleda’s office, gun brandished

Leaders and activists of Muktijoddha Projonma League yesterday tried to lay a siege around BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office where Khaleda Zia is staying since January 3.
Police, however, obstructed them from going to the office of Khaleda Zia and later they held a rally at Gulshan circle-2 demanding withdrawal of blockade.

Meanwhile, police moved away a man carrying a gun in his bag from the rally of Muktijoddha Projonma League. The man, who introduced himself as Mofizul Islam a freedom fighter from Shibpur, Narishingdi and joined the anti-hartal rally of Muktijoddha Projonma League allegedly went near BNP chairperson’s office and brandished his weapon at about 10:20am when the rally was going on at Gulshan circle-2.
The middle-aged man was asking why the hartal was not withdrawn. Police moved in and took him away and he showed his license for his gun.
When contacted Officer-in-Charge of Gulshan Police Station Rafiqul Islam cofirmed that a man was moving around at circle number 2 carrying a licensed gun in his hand bag and police moved him away from the rally.
“I cannot say whether he had been around the office of Khaleda Zia,” he added.
About 150 leaders and activists of Muktijoddha Projonma League led by Fatema Jalil Sathi, president of the organisation and general secretary Swapan Chowdhury joined the rally.
Meanwhile, the BNP chairperson’s office wore a deserted look as the party men refrained from visiting Khaleda Zia’s political office to avoid arrest and police harassment.
The on duty police deployed earlier in front of Khaleda’s office were seen a little away from the main entrance of the office.
The vigilance of plainclothes police and intelligence agencies drew the attention of media people when they barred Kallayan Party president Maj Gen (Retd) Syed Mohammed Ibrahim at about 6:45pm from from going to Khaleda’s office.
