Joint General Secretary of the ruling Awami League Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif on Tuesday claimed that people of the country have rejected BNP’s ‘destructive indefinite siege programme’.
“People have rejected Begum Khaleda Zia’s siege programme of terrorising them and politics of vengeance. So, I call upon her to call off such a destructive indefinite siege programme immediately,” he said.Hanif said this while speaking at a press conference at the political office of Awami League president Sheikh Hasina at Dhanmondi in the city.
Urging BNP chairperson to shun all sorts of destructive politics extending hands of cooperation to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for continuation of the country’s healthy political process, he said, “Begum Khaleda Zia has been enforcing indefinite programmes in her bid to save herself and her son from the graft cases. With this end in view, she has chosen the path of destructive programmes to kill democracy snatching people’s rights taking them as hostage, which the masses can’t accept in any way.”
Referring to the ensuing Biswa Ijtema, the second largest religious congregation of Muslims, to be held at Tongi in two phases from January 9 to January 18, the AL leader said, “A delegation of the Biswa Ijtema organisers tried to meet her today (Tuesday) for view-exchange on the matter. But, she (Begum Zia) declined to meet the delegation on the plea of not having a prior-meeting schedule. This incident again proved that her religious faith is totally fragile.”
Awami League presidium member Begum Matia Chowdhury, joint general secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak, organising secretary BM Mozammel Huq, office secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap, central working committee members SM Kamal Hossain, Sujit Roy Nandi, Enamul Haque Shamim and Aminul Islam Amin were present, among others. – BSS
