Marking the 6th death anniversary of veteran cinematographer, photographer, director and producer Baby Islam his family members and members of Shararitu, a cultural organisation, placed wreaths at his tomb at Banani Graveyard in the city on 24th May.
Islam was born in 1931 in Murshidabad, West Bengal. He was born to Abdul Hossain Biswas and Motaharun Nessa, although he was bought up by his grandfather and his mother, who was a teacher. He went to a missionary school in Sealdah and moved to Cathedral Mission High School.
He matriculated in 1945 before attending Bangabasi College, under the University of Calcutta. He went to Italy for higher studies on film. Before Partition (1947), Islam worked with noted Indian director Ajoy Kar as assistant director. In 1956, he joined as senior photographer at the Information Department in Dacca (Dhaka). He also served as the general manager of FDC (now BFDC).
Islam took part in many exhibitions and competitions. His photos were regularly featured in books and journals.
