Ballot recovery sparks protest in Khulna

Supporters of a defeated councillior candidate demonstrated in
Khasipur upazila of the city on Wednesday protesting a ballot recovery
at a polling centre.
Police said students of Khashipur Madrasa Orphanage, which was used as
polling centre in the June 15 Khulna City Corporation (KCC) election,
found a ballot paper in a toilet of it around 9.00am.
When the news spread, supporters of a defeated councillior candidate
named Sheikh Selim Ahmed of ward no 7 started demonstration and
blocked Khalispur road by burning tyres for about one hour.
On information, law enforcers rushed to the spot and dispersed them.
The supporters raised allegation of vote rigging at the polling centre
and demanded recount of votes.
Confirming the recovery, officer-in-charge (OC) Sukumar Biswas of
Khalispur Police Station, said the matter was already informed to the
returning officer who would take necessary steps in this regard after
investigation.
Mentionable, ward no 7 councillior candidate Sheikh Selim Ahamed was
defeated by only 120 votes to Sultan Mahmud Pintu in just held KCC
election.
