Ban on rallies, meetings govt’s last card: BNP

BNP standing committee member MK Anwar on Monday alleged that the government is using the ‘ban on rallies and public meetings’ as its last card to cling to power and subdue the opposition.“The government has resorted to tricks to push the opposition’s ongoing movement to a different direction. They’re using the restriction on meetings and rallies as their last weapon to hang onto office by suppressing the opposition,” he told a Doa Mahfil.
“It’s now only the emergency that is left for the government to promulgate.  But it won’t work to save the government as its fall is certain. There had been emergency in the past but people didn’t accept it,” the BNP policymaker added.
Dhaka city unit BNP organised the programme at Bhashani auditorium in the afternoon seeking early recovery of BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, now in Singapore for medical treatment.
A special munajat was offered after the milad for the recovery of Fakhrul.
Addressing the programme, Anwar said a special prayer is also necessary to arrange for the ministers and ruling party leaders as their unguarded and unconstitutional remarks prove that they all are sick.
Accusing the government of trying to stay in office by its repressive acts, Anwar said people will not let the present regime materialise its dream of returning to power through a lopsided election.
He urged the government to accept their demand for restoration of the nonparty caretaker government system and arrange the next general election under it. “I want to tell the government that you won’t be able to resolve the political crisis even by promulgating emergency. Take lesson from the history…try to understand the people’s pulse.”
The poll-time government will have to be a non-partisan one, the BNP leader said, adding that his party will not go to polls under an interim government headed by an Awami League leader.
Earlier at noon, another milad mahfil was held at the same venue arranged by Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal seeking early recovery of ailing BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
On May 14, Fakhrul went to Singapore and has been undergoing treatment at National University Hospital there. UNB
