The 93rd birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was observed as the National Children’s Day on Sunday with due respect and festivity.The day was a public holiday. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was born on March 17 in 1920 at Tungipara of Gopalganj district.
Through his dynamic leadership, Bangabandhu organised the Bengali nation to fight against exploitation and repression by Pakistani rulers that culminated in independent Bangladesh through nine months of liberation war in 1971. On August 15, 1975, the great leader was assassinated, along with most members of his family, by some disgruntled army men.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid rich tributes to the Father of the Nation placing wreaths at his portrait at 32 Dhanmondi Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in the capital and at his mazar at Tungipara.
A children rally, discussion and cultural function were organised at the mazar complex of the Father of the Nation marking his 93rd birth anniversary.
The ruling Awami League, its different associated bodies, socio-cultural and political organisations and ministries took elaborate programmes marking the day.
The national and party flags were hoisted atop Bangabandhu Bhaban in the capital and AL offices across the country at the dawn.
Bangla Academy organised a discussion and a cultural programme in the afternoon.
Bangamata Parishad organised a discussion titled, ‘Bangabandhu and Bangladesh’, at the National Press Club in the morning.
Islamic Foundation organised a Quran Khawani, milad and doa mahfil at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in the morning. A milad and doa mahfil was also held at the Bangabhaban Mosque on the occasion.
Cirdap distributed food among the orphans and destitute in the city marking the day.
President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages paying their rich tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. UNB
