Bangladesh is place for building, exporting ships: Experts

Experts at a seminar here on Thursday stressed the need for promoting the shipbuilding business in the country to earn more foreign currency by exporting ships.They said Bangladesh has huge potentials of accelerating shipbuilding business due to its geographical location and cheap lobour, so it should explore its potential by setting up shipyards in the coastal region.
Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Department of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) and RINA Bangladesh Limited jointly organised the seminar at the Buet council building.
Chaired by chairman of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Department at Buet, Dr M Rafiqul Islam, the seminar was addressed, among others, by president of the Association of Export Oriented Shipbuilding Industries Bangladesh Dr Abdullahel Bari, managing director of Western Marine Shipyard M Shakawat Hossain, country manager of RINA Group for Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia Jae-Young Lee and dean of Mechanical and Engineering faculty Prof Dr Refayet Ullah.
Speaking as the chief guest, Dr Abdullahel Bari said Bangladesh has a bright future in shipbuilding business. “Bangladesh is a situation place for shipbuilding. Exporting ships, we can earn a huge amount of foreign currency each year,” he said.
Bari said Bangladesh is still at nascent stage in shipbuilding business. “Apart from the garment sector, we can strengthen our economy developing the shipbuilding sector.”
He urged the shipbuilding companies, local and foreign entrepreneurs and experts to come forward to develop the emerging shipbuilding sector in the country. (Source: UNB)
