18 party alliance extends support to Mayor candidate Kamal ,
both alliances annoyed over rebel candidates
Ahead of only 25 days from the third Barisal City Corporation Election scheduled to be held on June 15, the BNP led 18 party alliance on Monday extended their support for Mayor candidate to Ahsan Habib Kamal, District (South) BNP President and former Mayor.
Adv Kamrul Ahsan Shahin, Barisal City BNP Secretary and former public prosecutor, who also present in the rally of announcement rally, decided to withdraw his nomination paper following the decision of the alliance.
Ruling Awami League led -14 party alliances holding a leaders-workers conference on May 10 at Barisal Club Auditorium declared Shawkat Hossain Hiron as their officially backed Mayor candidate for upcoming Barisal City Corporation Election 2013.
However rest two mayor candidates Ebaidul Huq Chan, former district BNP secretary and former president Barisal Chamber of Commerce and Industries and Mahmudur Rahman Khan Mamun alias Khan Mamun, joint secretary of district Jubo League, vowed to contest for BCC mayoral post making both alliance annoyed.
BNP-led 18 party alliance activists held a huge welcome showdown from the gateway to Barisal city and grand reception of Kamal Monday afternoon in front BNP office at Ashwini Kumar Hall premises on Monday afternoon after Kamal accompanied by Mojibor Rahman Sarwar, lawmaker, city president and central BNP organizing secretary reached from Dhaka by road.
From there Sarwar announced that BNP-led 18-party alliance now busy fighting for restoration of care taker government system. Ruling AL-led 14-party alliance taking this opportunity announced elections of major city corporations in the country to divert the public sensations and get benefit in general election by capturing local government structures.
Although local government elections are not political party based, but highly political in reflecting public views and so the 18-prty alliance decided to back Ahsan Habib Kamal as the candidate of Jatiyatabadi Nagorik Parishad in upcoming BCC election, Sarwar announced.
We hope that the 18-party alliance supporter other Mayor candidates will extend support to Kamal by withdrawing their nomination paper within May 26, the last date of withdrawal of candidateship, Sarwar added in presence of all prominent city and district leaders and activists of 18-party alliance..
On other hand Ebaidul Huq Chan holding a press conference in a city hotel on Monday morning announced that he will contest for BCC mayor post under the banner of Barisal Nagorik Forum to make Barisal formalin and drug-free and sustainable development.
I am a BNP supporter, but local government elections are not-political party based and so none should be declared as officially nominated candidate from any party, Chan added.
Mahmudur Rahman Khan Mamun alias Khan Mamun, mayor candidate and joint secretary of district Jubo League, said he had withdrawn his candidature in second BCC election as per request from the party and campaigning for Mayoral post for third BCC election since then and so will continue his participation in mayoral race.
Mentionable the then 14-party alliance backed Shawkat Hossain Hiron receiving 46,796 with a marginal difference of only 588 votes elected second BCC mayor on August 4, 2008 defeating his nearest rival BNP-led 4 party alliance backed Progatishil Democratic alliance candidate Sarfuddin Santu who received 46,208 votes .
Kamal during contesting for the mayoral post in 2008 elections received 26,416 votes and Ebaidul Huq Chan, former district BNP secretary and then BCCI president received 19,626 votes against Hiron in second BCC election.
