Despite the Public Service Commission’s PSC’s decision to review the results of the 34the BCS preliminary examinations,  the students from various educational institutions on Wednesday vowed to continue their movement until the quota system in government jobs is abolished and the 34th BCS preliminary results are cancelled.“The results of 34th BCS preliminary examinations have to be cancelled and recruitment of public servants must be based on merit and qualification abolishing all types of quota in government jobs,” said Mohammad Sayeed, a student of Dhaka University’s Mass Communication and Journalism, at a press briefing at Shahbagh.
He also said they will be there at Shahbagh till 10 pm today and resume their movement at 11 am on Thursday.
In the face of their movement against its quota system, Bangladesh Public Service Commission PSC on Wednesday said it would review the 34th BCS preliminary test results.
“Bangladesh Public Service Commission has decided to review the results of 34th BCS preliminary test following a misunderstanding among some students about the results published on July 8,” said a PSC press release.
Earlier, students from different educational institutions put up barricades at Shahbagh intersection in the capital, demanding immediate cancellation of the quota system in recruitment to government jobs.
Witnesses said several hundred students brought out a procession from the Dhaka University campus in the morning to press home their demand.
After parading the campus, the procession ended up at Shahbagh intersection blocking the roads.
The blockaders include students from Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, Jagannath University, Dhaka College and Eden College.
Due to the blockade, vehicular movement on the city’s arterial roads came to a halt creating long tailbacks and causing immense suffering to the commuters.
The results of the 34th BCS preliminary examination were published on Monday.
A total of 12,033 candidates, out of 225,575, have qualified for the PSC’s written examinations. – UNB
