BGB deployed at major power installations

The Power Ministry has instructed all the deputy commissioners (DCs) of districts to take necessary measures to beef up security at the major power installations including power plants and power sub-stations across the country.
According to a top official at the Power Ministry, instructions were sent to the DC offices on emergency basis following the recent attacks on a power sub-station at Kansat in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj district.
“After the attack, we sat in an emergency meeting and took some major decisions to enhance the security of the power installations across the country,” Power Ministry’s additional secretary Mofazzal Hossain told UNB.
He informed that the meeting discussed various points to ensure security to the power stations in both public and private sector.
“On our request, the Home Ministry has already deployed Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and also required number of police at power stations and also at the grid sub-stations in the troubled areas including Sirajganj, Pabna, Bogra, Sylhet, Chittagong and Barisal,” he said.
The additional secretary informed that the Power Ministry officials have also directly talked to the DCs of the troubled districts to convey some special messages.
Normally, big power stations and large capacity grid sub-stations like Ghorsal Power Station and Ashuganj Power Station are identified as key point installations (KPIs) and those are always guarded by the Army on permanent basis.
But the small power plants and local level distribution sub-stations do not fall under such arrangement. There is no special security for the local level power installations whose number will run to several thousand.
Mofazzal Hossain said all the local power offices have been instructed to be alert against any kind of attack or subversive activities.
“We’ve asked the local authorities to keep close contact with the local administration and community leaders to motivate the masses against any such acts of subversion,” he said.
According to Power Ministry officials, the recent attacks on power sub-stations made the government’s highest level very concerned because the irrigation season is already on and any attack or subversive activity would affect irrigation and eventually hamper crops production.
