BMP formed probe panel to investigate bribe-fund

The Barisal Metropolitan Police (BMP) has reconstituted its probe panel formed to look into the raising of bribe fund for promotion, replacing its head.

BMP commissioner Shaibal Kanti Chowdhury said the internal three-member probe committee formed earlier to investigate the bribe-fund collection has been recast for the sake of transparency.

BMP deputy commissioner (traffic) Abu Saleh Md Raihan has been made chief of the five-man probe panel removing Shoyeb Ahmed, deputy commissioner (headquarters).

Member of the previous committee Abul Kalam Azad, BMP assistant commissioner, was also dropped from the committee.

The other four members of the new committee are Shahnaz Parvin, Runa Laila, Asaduzzaman and Apu Sarwar, all BMP assistant commissioners.

The committee has been asked to submit its report within next three working days.

About the reason behind removing Shoyeb Ahmed as the probe panel chief, the BMP boss said although he was informed about the scam two months ago by another deputy commissioner, he ignored the matter.

Meanwhile, an amount of Tk 17 lakh has been found in the joint bank account of bribe-fund organisers and two cheques of Brac Bank of Tk 25 lakh each deposited to Dutch Bangla Bank Barisal branch by suspended deputy commissioner Zillur Rahman.

Earlier, BMP DC Zillur Rahman and at least 10 policemen were suspended for collecting the bribe money for use for the promotion of some police constables, ASIs and havilders.
