BNP senior leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Sunday alleged that Awami League has failed to have the international recognition for March 25 as Genocide Day.
“The West Pakistanis carried out the worst from of genocide on the Bangalees on the black night of March 25, 1971. But it’s a matter of regret that those who’re now in power and consider themselves as the only liberation force have failed to get its international recognition as genocide, even 47 years after the country’s independence,” he said.
The BNP leader came up with the comment while speaking at a discussion arranged by Swadhinata Forum, a pro-BNP platform, at the Jatiya Press Club, marking the Independence Day.
The nation is observing the ‘Genocide Day’ in a somber mood today (Sunday), commemorating the brutalities and cowardly attacks carried out by the Pakistani occupation forces on the unarmed Bangalees on the night of March 25, 1971.
Referring to a German-based institution’s recent study report, Mosharraf, a BNP standing committee member, deplored that the government earned a shameful international recognition that Bangladesh is now one of the five new countries which have been under an autocratic rule.
He said now there is no reason for considering Bangladesh as a democratic country after the way the current regime forced a Chief Justice to quit, destroyed the country’s three basic pillars, democracy and snatched people’s rights of association and expression.
Criticising the government for repeatedly denying BNP to hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan, Mosharraf said it allowed autocratic ruler Ershad to hold the similar programme at the same venue on a day he had annihilated democracy.
He alleged that the government is not willing to allow BNP to hold a rally in the city as it seriously fears people and the party.
The BNP leader said their party has long been carrying out a peaceful movement. “But people will determine the course of our movement in the days to come observing the government’s attitude.”
Mentioning that the government is trying to hold another lopsided election like the January-5, 2014 one, he warned that their party will surely foil all its plots over the next polls.
Mosharraf said though it will take six more years for Bangladesh to get the recognition of a developing country, the government is celebrating it now with much vigor only to mislead people.
