Dhaka – BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has complained that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is ‘selling’ Bangladesh to India to translate her ‘dream of staying in power for life’ into reality. She made the comments as the prime minister was in India on a four-day visit and 22 agreements and MoUs, including some of those relating to defence, were signed between the two countries in New Delhi on Saturday.
The main opposition BNP has been critical of the defence deals on the argument that the government has opened up Bangladesh’s defence to the neighbour through those deals and criticised the government for the ‘failure’ to get a deal Teesta water sharing signed during the visit.
Khaleda said the people would rise against such unequal deals as she was speaking at her office in Gulshan on the day.
She cautioned the world history says no one could get away after selling a country. “Those who have bought the country won’t come to save her when the people will rise,” she 2waqs quoted as saying
Slain leader of BNP’s student associate organisation Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Nurul Alam Nuru’s wife and children came to meet Khaleda on the day. Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal organised the programme at which the BNP chief handed the family some money.
Nuru was picked up by plainclothesmen allegedly along with some uniformed men from his residence in Chittagong on Mar 30. His body was found in Raujan the next day.
The BNP chief has been quoted as saying, “Hasina dreams of remaining in power for life. She has done many things for this. She kept nothing for the country; sold everything,” . “It seems that she will sell the rest of the country,” she added.
It is to be noted that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina before setting off for New Delhi on the 4-day tour of India accused the BNP of having reached an understanding to sell gas if the party was elected. The PM had also complained that the results of the 2001 elections, through which BNP has come back to power with a massive mandate, were conspiratorial.
