BNP calls hartal in four dists

Local units of BNP on Tuesday called separate hartals in Comilla, Rajshahi, Sirajganj and Sylhet for Wednesday and Thursday. In Comilla, district (south) unit BNP will enforce an eight-hour hartal in the district on Thursday protesting the killing of auto-rickshaw driver Delwar Hossain and rickshaw-puller Babul Miah.Mostaq Ahmed, organising secretary of the BNP unit, announced the shutdown from the namaz-e-janaza for Delwar in the city at noon.
Human-hauler driver Delwar Hossain, 25, was killed in a clash between activists of the BNP-led 18-party alliance and cops at Monaharpur in the city on Monday night.
Meanwhile, rickshaw-puller Babul Miah was killed and 10 other were injured in police firing during a clash between police and opposition 18-party activists in Doulotganj Dighirpar area in Laksam upazila on Tuesday.
In Rajshahi, local BNP called a half-day hartal in the district for Wednesday protesting Tuesday’s police attack on party activists that left 70 people injured.
Addressing a press briefing, BNP leader Mizanur Rahman Minu announced the hartal programme to be observed from 6 am to 12 pm.
At least 70 people, including city unit BNP general secretary Shafiqul Haque Milon, were injured in a clash with police when the BNP activists tried to block Zero Point in Sahebazar area of the city in the morning while enforcing 18-party alliance’s 48-hour rail-road-waterway blockade programme.
In Sirajganj, local BNP will enforce a daylong hartal in the district on Thursday protesting the killing of a pro-blockade activist.
A man drowned after jumping into a pond in a bid to get away from police during a clash between the law enforcers and blockaders at Jogaimore in the district town on Tuesday morning.
In Sylhet, Biswanath upazila unit BNP called a daylong hartal in the upazila for Wednesday protesting the arrest of party men, including upazila unit general secretary Gous Khan, on Tuesday. – UNB
