The BNP on Friday demanded resignation of Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith and Governor of Bangladesh Bank Dr Atiur Rahman over the stealing of money from a Bangladesh Bank’s account with US Federal Reserve Bank in New York.
“They (Muhith and Atiur) are the responsible to make the country’s economy `rubbish`. How they are still in their posts after stolen $US80 million? They have no ethical rights to hold their posts anymore. Thus, we demand they will resign without any delay taking the responsibility for the heist,” said BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed.
Addressing a press briefing at the party’s headquarters at Naya Paltan in the city, he said the country’s economy would suffer a lot as result of stealing money from the Bangladesh Bank with US Federal Reserve Bank.
He alleged claimed that ruling party men are involved in Bangladesh Bank money robbery.
The BNP leader termed the money robbery amounting to $10.10 crore biggest notorious act of swindling in the country’s history.
He mentioned Bangladesh Bank has already confessed that an influential and organized quarter of the ruling party are involved in the incident of money swindling.
“The country men also believed that it is not possible to commit such an incident without the help of government people,” he said.
Rizvi said Bangladesh is heading towards a severe blockade due to absence of democracy and accountability in the country.
“It is unfortunate but true that Bangladesh’s money is now in the casinos of Philippines,” he said.
He said the involvement of big fishes in the swindling will be unearthed if the passports of top Bangladesh Bank officials and political leaders, who recently visited different countries like Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Dubai under different pretext are checked properly.
Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu and Khairul Kabir Khokan, among others, were present on the occasion.
Meanwhile, addressing a meeting a Bangladesh Photojournalists Association, BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan expressed deep concern over the incident of stealing o Bangladesh money from US Federal Reserve Bank.
“Bangladesh money deposited in other countries is now also being swindled due to absence of accountability of the government to the people,” he said while addressing a meeting demanding withdrawal of sedition cases filed against BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.
The Labour Party, an ally of BNP-led 20-party alliance organised the meeting with Shamsuddin Parvej, city president of the party, in the chair. – Staff Reporter
