BNP for release of its MPs before JS sits

Opposition BNP on Thursday requested Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury to take necessary steps for releasing its two arrested MPs — MK Anwar and Barkatullah Bulu — before parliament goes into its budget session.A delegation of BNP MPs, led by opposition chief whip Zainul Abedin Farroque, made the request when they meet her at her office.
The opposition MPs also handed over the Speaker a letter demanding the release of the two MPs.
The other members of the delegation are Shaheed Uddin Chowdhury Anee, Abul Khair Bhuiyan, Nazimuddin Alam, Rehana Akhter Ranu and Shammi Akter.
Contacted, Anee told UNB that they urged the Speaker to take necessary steps so that Anwar and Bulu can be freed from jail before parliament goes into session on June 3.
Asked whether they discussed their parliament joining, the BNP MP said they told the Speaker that if the two MPs are released, they will hold a meeting of BNP parliamentary party on the afternoon of June 3 and take the decision to attend the session.
The Speaker assured them of taking steps in this regard after discussions with the government, he added.
This was the maiden meeting of the opposition MPs with Dr Sharmin since she was sworn in as the country’s first female Speaker on April 30.
On May 27, a Dhaka court rejected the bail prayer of BNP leader MK Anwar and sent him to jail after he surrendered in a case filed by Swechchaasebak League leader Debashish Biswas for making a derogatory comment against him over Hefajat Islam’s May 5 Dhaka siege programme.
Besides, Bulu was arrested when he came out of the BNP’s Nayapaltan central office on May 15 in connection with March 11 city violence and a Dhaka court sent him to jail the following day. (Source: UNB)
