BNP leader held over bomb blast in Rajshahi rally

Police arrested a local BNP leader early Sunday in a case filed over the crude bomb attack on a rally of the party’s mayoral candidate Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul.

A joint team of detective branch (DB) and Boalia Police Station in a drive arrested Motiur Rahman Montu, general secretary of BNP district unit, from his house in the city’s Ramchandrapur area around 2:30 am, said senior Assistant Commissioner Ifte Khayer Alam, spokesperson of Rajshahi Metropolitan police.

Police arrested Montu following the leak of an audio clip over alleged conversation between Montu and another BNP leader regarding attack on the rally.

Montu was arrested along with his licensed arms on specific information and proof, Ifte Khayer Alam added.

SM Hafiz Akter, commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, at a press briefing at its office in the afternoon, said BNP carried out the bomb attack in a planned way to make the upcoming election questionable and earn sympathy from the voters.

The audio clip contains the alleged telephonic conversation between Motiur Rahman Montu, general secretary of BNP district unit and Taiful Islam Tipu, office-secretary of central committee recorded on July 19, two days after the incident.

During the conversation, they admitted that the bomb attack was carried out by their party men and uttered the name of two attackers, Ifte Khayer Alam said.

After receiving the audio clips police arrested Montu from his residence, he added.

The audio clip was also played before the reporters at the press briefing.

Meanwhile, BNP candidate Bulbul claimed that police arrested Montu for participating in the election campaign. “There was no new case against him,” he claimed.

Earlier, on July 17, the rally of BNP candidate came under crude bomb attack in Sagorpara Bottolar Mor area around 11 am.

Later, Sub-inspector ShamimHossain of Boalia Police Station filed a case accusing eight unnamed people.

Earlier, police arrested a man in connection with the incident.
