BNP leader killed at Meherpur

A local leader of Meherpur BNP was killed in a “gunfight” with police at Bandar village in Shashan ghat area of Meherpur sadar uapzila in Meherpur early Monday.The deceased is Ramjan Sheikh, 42, son of late Amir Sheikh of Rajnagar village in the sadar upazila.He was the vice-president of Pirojpur union of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).Ahsan Habib, officer-in-charge of sadar police station, said Ramjan was arrested from the upazila around 8:30pm Sunday.Police claimed that they later conducted a drive along with Ramjan at Bandar village in Shashan ghat area around 2:30am on Monday to “recover firearms.During the drive, some of arrested Ramjan’s associates attacked and fired gunshots at the police members in a bid to free Ramjan when the law enforcers retaliated, triggering a gunfight,” according to the claim of the law enforcers.Ramjan was caught in the line of fire and critically injured while his associates managed to flee the scene.Later, Ramjan was rushed to Maherpur General Hospital where doctors declared him dead.Police also recovered one light gun, two rounds of bullets and some sharp weapons from the spot.Police said Ramjan was wanted in several cases including those for attacking police and planning to carry out subversive activities.
